  • I think people need to abandon the idea that we will go from being a far right country to a socialist or progressive one overnight. We didn’t get this far right in one election cycle, we crept this way over time. You want to see big progressive change? Start doing what you can to move the country left, but don’t do something out of spite that the country isn’t moving left fast enough that makes it more likely that the country moves right.

If Newsom is the candidate, vote for him. Then put a ton of pressure on him to enact meaningful progressive policy change. And elect as many progressives as you can to Congress. But, if a neoliberal is on the ballot against a fascist, show up and support the neoliberal. And, raise up and empower progressive media. And, actually get out there yourself and be part of all this.

  • I think first we need to see if there is a political solution. If Trump loses enough support or somehow we manage to have midterm elections that aren’t messed with too egregiously and swing to the democrats, then we could get there peacefully. Another possibility is Trump’s health fails and there isn’t a clear successor that is powerful enough to unite his base of support.

While we can hope for those two possibilities to give us a chance at not seeing total fascism in America, I do share your perspective. Things aren’t good and we are very likely in a time just before things get very bad. No one is going to save you. Maybe some meaningful, clear-eyed resistance organizes (in which case civil war is possible), but you should start making arrangements. Either get out now, or figure out a few plans for what you’d do if you had to quickly react to something like that.

  • You somehow missed my entire point. The Russians themselves aren’t a particularly self-motivated bunch. In order to make them fight, the army literally has to threaten to kill them. Behind their front line, they have another line of Russians that will shoot anyone who tries to retreat. Surrender? You’ll also be killed for that. Also, alcoholism is pretty rampant with soldiers frequently being drunk. You can find clips of them drunk driving their military vehicles online, even getting into accidents with each other.

The US army has also proven pretty capable against the Russians in recent battles in Syria — like the battle of Khasham. If the Russians can barely win against the Ukrainians, I think the US would pretty capably put Russia down. Add in all the expensive weaponry and the US could manage.

  • Not sure why you find it funny. You’re not talking about a country of religious zealots like you find in the Middle East. You’re talking about a country full of drunks where half of all deaths for men are attributable to alcoholism. Add in that Ukraine has steadily ground down Russia’s supply of military hardware to the point where Russia is now pretty much a soft target. Russians are riding into battle on e-bikes now because they barely have any tanks left. Of the tanks that do remain, they’re circa 1940s and 50s.

Edit: or, downvote and say nothing because you haven’t got a response.
