Military surveillance drones could do it for sure, but those are basically just remote controlled (and perhaps semi-autonomous) planes.

Consumer drones aren’t allowed to flight that high and most can’t fly that fast for long. If you put a drone anywhere near a plane it would not just be super dangerous, but also super illegal. Most consumer drones will absolutely refuse to fly anywhere near where planes are allowed to fly.

But an ultralight plane can be filmed or photographed using consumer drones. Just check out the YouTube channel PeterSripol, he does that kind of thing all the time.

However drone technology hasn’t been at the required level for long, that’s a recent thing. Just check out these amazing photos of the X-15 plane taken around 1960. No drones around 65 years ago. They used an F-104A Starfighter as a chase plane to take the images.

Or this one from 1927 of people standing on the outside of a plane, taken from a chase plane. That’s almost a hundred years ago.

I imagine two stoners sitting in front of the screen, both as high as a kite. The one is totally in another world and goes: “Dude, who took the picture? But like who tho?” and the other one hyper focused goes on a long rant about chase planes. After the rant winds down the other dude goes: “Drones maybe? Could be drones”
