Four trans Americans claiming refuge abroad tell Io Dodds why they no longer feel safe in their home country, from fears of martial law to being arrested in changing rooms
Im so scared i literally dont know what to do. I fled to a “safer” state after the election and now i have to leave it all behind. I want to just disappear but i really need to start packing i guess. I have enough in my measly retirement fund for one more move. Canada is looking like its only 2 locksteps behind us and mexico is not very friendly to american immigrants rn (for good reason). I genuinely dont know what to do and there are so many people in a worse spot than i am; i cant help but feel guilty for even considering fleeing.
Fun fact: American specifically can’t ask for asylum with their neighbors.

Why is that?
