Linux Gaming@lemmy.world•PC Gamer: "I'm brave enough to say it: Linux is good now, and if you want to feel like you actually own your PC, make 2026 the year of Linux on (your) desktop"English
11·18 days agoDebian 13 was a new Debian release in June. Meaning the devs and sid/unstable users had done enough to determine that the sometimes 5 year old “new features” in the packages were stable.
I love Debian for it’s stability. Makes it great in the homelab. The devs will back port security patches from upstream, but features (especially potentially breaking features) get years of testing before being implemented in the stable release. Even sid (their testing branch) is more stable than most other distros main branch.
But all of that means that the actual features in the packages released for Debian are ancient, especially by gaming standards.
Which is to say, Debian 13, at the time of release, had about as much bleeding edge as a stone sphere.

21·30 days agoMcDonald’s in Japan is actually pretty good.
Which speaks more to the general quality of food in Japan rather than the quality of Japanese McDonald’s. You can get better food at basically any other restaurant in the country.
But still, it tastes like actual food, unlike American, Australian, and Italian McDonald’s.

Linux Gaming@lemmy.world•Is game streaming too late to get into?English
8·1 month agoEvery time I’ve seen major streamers asked similar questions, the answer has usually been “just do it.” If you enjoy it, keep doing it, if you don’t stop.
In all likelihood, early on you might get the occasional singular viewer, but otherwise you won’t get much, which will provide you with time to get used to talking and narrating while playing, as well as develop some kind of style or tone that you want to go for.
As for concerns over what people think of you, as you get more comfortable with things, you’ll find an audience who enjoys what you’re doing. It’s kind of the nature of the platform. You’ll also get people who don’t like what you’re doing and really want to tell you about it, that’s also the nature of the platform. They can be ignored and/or banned if it’s bad enough. Probably a good idea to set some stream rules early on and enforce them.
But at the end of the day, what matters is that you’re having fun.

Anime@ani.social•What is your best anime-related song?English
2·1 month agoThe opening for Watamote, I really like. The anime itself is pretty bad, though it was fun to drunkenly watch with a friend. - This
Tank! from Cowboy Bebop is one of my favorite classics, though really the entire Bebop OST could be on that list.
OP1 from Ranma 1/2 is a fun listen.
And every Creepy Nuts song in Call of the Night is an absolute banger.
ED1 - Yofukashi no Uta
OP1 - Daten
ED2 - Nemure
OP2 - Mirage
And several other insert songs. Easily some of my favorite anime music atm.

3·1 month agoI’m far from an expert and have never setup borg, but I see some possible problems with that config, though I don’t think I see anything that would cause it fail.
-
In the environment section of borg, borgmatic, and borgweb, the “BORG_PASSPHRASE” variable is used inconsitently, it either needs to be uncommented in borg or commented out in borgmatic and borgweb.
-
Networks: having a single “backup_net” network is less than ideal from a security standpoint. Nginx should probably be in it’s own network (an ipvlan or macvlan network) in addition to the backup_net. backup_net should be isolated to the host that are running borg, while any communication into borg should be routed through nginx on its ip.

Unpopular Opinion@lemmy.world•Duct tape and WD-40 are memesEnglish
5·2 months agoWhile the term “duct tape” does commonly refer to both the (usually) grey fabric based tape and the aluminum foil based tape used in duct work, technically only the aluminum tape is duct tape.
The proper term for the fabric based tape is actually duck tape as it was originally made from cotton duck, which is a durable cotton weave similar to denim or canvas that can be easily made water resistant by impregnating it with wax. It was invented during WWII and was used to seal ammo cans. It’s also not particularly resistant to extreme temperatures nor is it air tight, and is kind of useless when it comes to duct work.
Duck Tape is also a name brand for both duck tape and duct tape.

Voyager@lemmy.world•Bug: Black borders / smaller window after postingEnglish
7·2 months agoI know it’s almost two weeks later, but I’m also seeing this issue. My experience matches the others reported here.
After I post a comment/reply I get a slightly shrunken window with black borders.
Additionally, some of the UI elements look slightly washed out in color.
It’s almost like the animation for returning from the reply screen never fully finishes.

3DPrinting@lemmy.world•I'm doing something wrong; can't print this PETGEnglish
3·2 months agoHow can you tell it’s under extruded?
@PostnataleAbtreibung@lemmy.world said the same thing in an earlier comment.
If there’s some clear sign of under extrusion it might be useful for my reference doc I use when trying to troubleshoot failed prints.

In some sense this is correct. Chess strategy is fairly well documented, and a skilled player will know quite a bit of how a game will play out based on a given board state.
In another sense, there are something like 10^46 legal board states that can be reached from the starting state across all legal permutations of the game rules.
It’s functionally impossible for a person to know the outcome of a game from the first move.
