Just to interject a little bit of context for those that don’t know… UMU is Glorious Eggroll’s project, so it has some clout to it.

LinuxNext has a nice long video about it.
My understanding is that lutris is actually in maintenance mode (still around but not being updated) so this is meant to be a replacement for that… and bottle is a more general purpose tool without the gaming enhancements, hence this is being promoted these days.

4·1 month agoThey do a cashgrab bs reboot of a beloved franchise… release a bland, weird AI looking movie… then get caught stealing artwork inside the game itself. “we don’t understand why you don’t trust us!!” fuuuuuckoff.
Sure… and so is smashing your watch with a hammer while you’re still wearing it. But neither of them are a good idea for your apple watch or your health.

1·2 months agoI had forgotten that KDE was doing another core showcase distro.
KDE Linux is an “immutable base OS” Linux distro created using Arch Linux packages, but it should not be considered an “Arch-based distro”; Arch is simply a means to an end, and KDE Linux doesn’t even ship with the pacman package manager.
KDE Linux leans on Systemd for a great deal of functionality. Updates are atomic and image-based, with the last 5 OS images cached on disk. Only the Wayland session is supported. Apps primarily come from Flatpak and Snap.
What? This just sounds like a linux fever dream lol. Definitely interested to see what they do though.

1·2 months agoYeah, that was the point I was making in part 2 of the OP… I’ve just heard that some debian distros (mostly heard about ubuntu) will still just do whatever it feels like. Having trouble finding concrete info if that’s still an issue though :/

3·2 months agoAlso, Mint kinda follows Ubuntu’s release cycle, so I would say it’s as up to date as Ubuntu
They follow Ubuntu LTS… so the core is a every four version which is 2 years between core updates.
Part of the thoughts on kubuntu was that it will be far more up to date with the KDE versions.
The two reasons I prefer Mint over native *buntu is because of Cinnamon
Absolutely. Cinnamon is great. That was the other WM that they liked but eventually decided that they wanted to use KDE.
They may well decide they want to distro hop or settle into a more stable system that doesn’t change much in the future, but the semi-annual model of changing to the latest UI/UX while still having a longer testing phase ended up being the most appealing option.

2·2 months agoThe faster release cycle was something I wanted to keep without committing to rolling release. Debian does what… 2 years per release? I considered Mint but they are more focused on “stable” and I’m hoping for a fresher system (also moving to wayland is definitely a friction point for mint dev).

1·2 months agoYeah… I always made sure I had some Idea Channel, VSauce, and Veritasium on tap whenever possible. The latter is the only one that really still does it’s thing… and even that’s getting a little sus these days with Derek promoting general “ai” usage. :/

4·3 months agoIf “signs of life” isn’t them saying “wow we fucked up by stealing art and changing the type of game the fans wanted. We’re sorry. We’ll make a high quality single player experience instead” then I’m definitely uninterested in their nonsense.
It’s going to depend on a few things:
- What you think you’ll what to shoot
- Budget
- Size / weight requirements 4ish. Preferred brand or existing camera equipment
Personally I really like micro four thirds stuff for a mix of small but versatile. It’s also great because if you’re looking for bang for buck on a budget, older M43 cameras can be gotten used for really reasonable prices relatively.

It’s available in a humble bundle for the next couple days as well…
