Technology@lemmy.world•4 reasons Plex is turning into the thing it replacedEnglish
6·2 months agoEmby is closed source and costs money to have access to all features. I’d recommend Jellyfin because it’s a free and open source fork of Emby with almost the exact same functionality.

32·3 months agoIs it even possible for Ofcom to legally fine 4chan for these issues? How does a company in the UK fine a US company?

Congrats on switching to Firefox, it’s the best option. Ublock origin is a plus as well.

5·5 months agoI thought this was a really fascinating video, since Apple Explained is one of the biggest Apple-Stans on youtube. He finally realized that his favorite company is wrought with greed, and was willing enough to make a video about it. The content or his ideas don’t necessarily matter; it’s his revelation that’s intriguing.

Technology@lemmy.world•Women Dating Safety App 'Tea' Breached, Users' IDs Posted to 4chanEnglish
375·6 months agoThe Tea app is agnostic. While its purpose and main use case was made for the safety of women in the dating scene, it was inevitably used to spread exaggerated or misleading information about otherwise innocent men. Imagine being a privacy-conscious individual, and breaking up with a toxic woman. She could go on to spread lies about you and even upload pictures of you to the reverse image search/ai. So even if you were doing everything right from a privacy standpoint, you’d still end up in someone’s private database, subjected to ai training, shared with the government, or who knows what. While I do see the purpose of apps like these, they can effectively take away someone’s privacy/dignity without them even knowing about it. Now imagine being a 4channer, someone probably even more privacy-conscious than lemmings, and possibly experiencing mental disorders like paranoid schizophrenia or autism; of course they’re drawn to hacking an app that would destroy their privacy. They are not sane individuals, so this event really was inevitable.

9·6 months agoYou can’t block all of Windows spyware. The best case of action would be to install an alternative operating system like Linux or a BSD-derivative. It’s counter-intuitive to “fuck Microsoft” when you are still using their OS.
Does paying a freelance artist to make art for you mean that you are an artist? The same argument applies for your signature on AI art. You only described it, that doesn’t mean that you made it. This belongs in C/Adoringdystopia

Mildly Infuriating@lemmy.world•US Congressmen praying inside the House of RepresentativesEnglish
2·7 months agoThis is only partially true, as the First Amendment states “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof.” As you can see, practice of religion is not prohibited. My main point is that prayer will probably not have any meaningful impact on the success of immoral decisions.

Mildly Infuriating@lemmy.world•US Congressmen praying inside the House of RepresentativesEnglish
4·7 months agoI controversially agree, freedom of religion is a fundamental part of the United States’s identity. However, these people could always be praying for terrible things, so there’s a definite duality to this image. That being said, I think that religion can be seen as a mixture of freedom of speech and expression; I believe that this is a human right. Secondly, since I’m assuming that most of you are atheists here, why should you worry about what they are even praying for? If atheism states that there is no all-powerful deity, then this bickering is meaningless. If Christianity and its teachings happen to be true, then it is certain that the Christian God would never be in favor of what’s currently happening. For example, Mark 12:31 states “The second is this: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ There is no commandment greater than these.” Which is the complete antithesis towards current events. As you can see, both possibilities show that God or not, the current administration is not supported by either.

2·7 months agoI decided to take the Hillsdale college course on “communism” just for fun, and it’s some of the same rhetoric. Communism is bad because… (shows Revolutionary to Stalinist Soviet Union and pride flags). Marx and Engels were actually hypocrites because they are bourgeois! (Technically true for Engels, but he used his class for good as a way to further communist ideals.) I’d actually recommend this course because all it does is strengthen your left ideals.

Privacy@lemmy.world•Smart TVs taking snapshots of your screen and phoning home - Is there a list of IP ranges to block?English
7·7 months agoI disconnected my smart tv from WiFi and just use my own home network. By setting up a static ip address on both my tv and media server through the eXXXX device, and connecting the two via Ethernet cable, I can access any media I have saved on the server from the tv with little to no lag. This allows the tv to continue being “smart” to some extent, but only with the addresses I specify. It’s also arguably better since Ethernet speeds are usually 100+mbps for me against 2mbps wireless speeds.

Privacy@lemmy.world•I'm being forced into using Life360. Is there anything I can do?English
5·7 months agoThe issue was extremely non-negotiable, and the person wouldn’t listen to reason. Therefore I ended up following advice best I could by creating a new dedicated email for the Life360 account, and additionally using initials instead of a full name. Because I’m stuck on iOS for now, I have no option but to constantly track my precise location in the background. My VPN does not work with location spoofing on Life360. I’ve turned off any data collection/analytics in the in-app settings that I could find, but that’s probably only scratching the surface of how much more you can’t control or disable. I mourn the loss of the privacy that I’ve sustained for so long, and my battery as well; it has taken a massive hit since Life360 was installed. I may look into a cheap wireless plan to support Life360 on a secondary smartphone, but otherwise I’m just going to have to wait until I have the opportunity to get a Pixel for GrapheneOS until this issue is truly resolved. In the meantime I’m considering getting something like a faraday bag for externally blocking phone signals. Thanks for all of your suggestions.
