To be fair, I don’t think the meme question ever specified what kind of bear they’re going to meet in the woods. I know my answer would change drastically based on the type of bear.

I’m wondering if they got France and Germany mixed up. I don’t remember all the French I was taught growing up, but it didn’t sound right. So I googled it and got “droigts” and “orteils” for “fingers” and “toes”.

6·15 days agoIsn’t privateering still done by a privately owned ship? Pretty sure when government vessels do it, it is just a blockade/sanctions enforcement/etc, until someone declares war about it.
True, but I will not tolerate apps that engage in that kind of shitty behavior. Makes me think that they are farming my data. Why else would something like a grocery list app give two shits about whether or not I used it.
The problem comes when the app has an actual useful purpose for notifications, but it also chooses to send this type of bullshit. So I allow notifications, and immediately uninstall any app that abuses that permission.

AntiTrumpAlliance@lemmy.world•some epstein files can be unredacted...The Trump administration is so bloody stupid they just highlighted the text in black in the pdfs, leaving all the text available underneath.English
52·15 days agoThis screams malicious compliance to me. A lot of the staffers who would actually be doing this work are not elected officials doing this kind of work for the first time, and there would absolutely be strong guidelines on how to properly redact something.
Well now you just triggered a false vacuum decay on the far side of the galaxy. Way to go.
Still cheaper than moving my main computer to DDR5

5·26 days agoEveryone is free to set their own priorities, but for me, I’ll just not purchase a thing at all, rather than buy it off Amazon. Most people buy too much crap they don’t actually need anyway.

4·26 days agoThe first thing I would do if I had a magic wand and could just change reality to see what happens, would be to get rid of Citizens United and whatever they called that decision that said money=speech. That’s the kind of thing that could actually happen without requiring wholesale societal change. Add in some strong campaign finance laws and maybe you could get some politicians who aren’t putting themselves up for auction to the highest bidder.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•If you automated 95% of your job, but still had to report to an office/cubicle, what would you do with your (40hrs)time?

96·28 days agoI’m pretty sure that kind of knowledge falls under the “huh. Neat.” category anyway. It’s the kind of knowledge that, while a cool thing to learn, will have absolutely no bearing on my current life, and is not going to be likely to have any practical applications for many years to come.

4·1 month agoI’m definitely with you on that. I won’t buy any smart devices that require internet connections these days. And when looking to automate things, I’m much more likely to be buying a dumb device and a smart plug, rather than a smart device. That way I can still manually use the device if and when the automation side fails somewhere along the line.

29·1 month agoI never understood why anyone would buy one in the first place. I like home automation where it makes sense (like having some of my bedroom lights and my coffee maker tied to my phone alarm in the morning) but why would anyone ever tie their fridge to the internet?

35·1 month agoIf what you currently have already works for you, why be concerned with the form factor of something designed for a slightly different use case?

I kind of wish that something along the lines of the old PCMCIA format had survived. Flat, stackable, big enough for easy labelling, and these days could easily fit many terabytes of flash storage.
