  • I call bullshit.

If you were coding in the 80’s i have hard time beliving you did not use math in Pascal or COBOL. And i remember needing lots of math with anything 3d in 2000

Also you cant state all mathematicians make horrible programmers because they often lack the “real programming side”. Its not a boolean. They might be bad coders because they are bad at coding, not because they are mathematics. Its like saying all painters are bad writers. Both coding and math have a lot of overlapping qualitities and people who understand other have easier time learning other, but it does not mean they are inherently good or bad in the other one.

  • They lean pretty much to finnish culture in their games. The Old gods of asgard-band from alan wake games is alias for Finnish band Poets of the fall

The coffee termoses in alan wake and controll are just blue versions of the legendary airam-thermos that was long time basic kitchen accessory allmost in every kitchen,

Ahti character speaks and sings in Finish a lot and Ahti is Finnish name meaning the god of the water (basically Finnish version of Poseidon)

In Alan wake 2 there is town of Finish immigrants and the town hall and the sauna next to the lake both are riddled with details. Things like finnish darts boards (tikka taulu) to the old bike leaning to the sauna are really authentic things.

Also Ahma bear means wolwerine beer, and finlands most popular domestic beer has really similar design and is called Karhu, a bear.

Max payne has also music from finland, finish vodka bottles.

All games have also many many nods to Finnish culture. If you ever tought any building looks weird or some poster or picture in the wall does not seem to fit, it most likely nod towards something cultural in Finland.

Also RedLynx (Trials), Housemarque (Returnal), and Allmost Human (Legend of Grimrock), Frozenbyte (Trine), Bugbear (Flatout, wreckfest) are From finland.

On mobile side there is Supercell (Clash of Clans), Rovio (Angry birds) and Fingersoft (Hill climb racing)

Also if somebody likes rogue likes there is game called UnReal world that is about surviving in finnish iron age, its a freeware game that first came out in 1992 and to my knowledge had updates untill 2016.

  • It all ready seems little counterintuitive to keep commenting here but you literally commented: “But my main gripe, regardless of the topic, is to say “everyone does it so it’s fine”.” and im trying to answer to that, why everybody does it.

Also if you are speaking in a wider sense. When there are busineses that make hundreds of millions you can be sure there is a reason why they do what they do. For example Amazon does insane amount if research how their checkout works and how to make sure most customers that reach that point would finish the purchace. You can be sure what they do works, so why any other companies would use their time doing the same research when they can just copy the homework of others.

  • Only sith deal in absolutes.

Caremag/Caresters plant in France is scheduled to open in 2026 and Solvay that is already running in France is trying to hit 30% of EU’s demand by 2030.

If we would start building the mines right now it would take close to 10 years to have the mines running. By that time the refining process in France should be pretty well tested and if there would be more minerals produced than they can process, building new facility with the know how they have accumulated and any progress in tech, is not that big of an leap anymore.

By the way this would be pretty close how Norway originally got their economy running with hydropower and later with oil. They waited until there was enough know how to make effective plants. Then they made deals with outside companies where the state would own part of the facilities, but the companies would make enough money to make a profit. After the deals would expire the state would get the now profitable facilities for them self, but the original companies had made enough money for the deal to be good for them.

  • Hard to say. Current political view seem to be that EU wants to get rid of dependancy on china and great way to get free is to start mining our own.

There is pretty large deposits in Sweden, Finland and Norway so one effiecient, central refining plant could be churning virtually limitless amounts of materials, if only there would be enough funding to get the ball rolling. (Before anybody says i know Norway is not part of european union, but it is part of european economic area and part of EFTA) France already has a refining plant so the tech knowledge is already found inside the EU.

Care to give some sources to that?

With quick google-fu Nordics seem to be in pretty comfy positions in world wide rankings. Not at the top but certainly in the best 20%

Also there is huge difference in the sense that even if you are poor in the nordics you still have right to healthcare and education. At some places you would just be fucked.

  • And im giving you a context “why everyone does it”.

There is also plenty of other benefits in releasing cinematic trailer. First thing of course is to get knowledge of the game out there and create intrests, but it also:

Helps devs to gauge the intrest in their game, See how people react and if necessary change things early in the production, If company is in stock market, it necessary to make clear to the public they are doing something, If they have financial backers its easy to give them reassurences by telling how many times the trailer has been watched and commented. Especially important if they have nothing else going on that quater or financial year, Youtube statistics also give devs insight to their fanbase as they see who are the people watching it, and that helps them gauge things like need for localization

The part about moanin isint necessary about you, but more general thing. Sorry if it felt like attack towards you.

  • There is real world reason why everyone does it.

Graphics are usually one of the last things that get finished in games. There is no sense spending hundreds of hours and thousands if dollars to make character models and levels pretty, when there are bound to be changes in both.

Teaser trailers basic gist is to show people “hey we are making this, follow us for more”, cinematic trailers are world building and showing the overall theme. Also if the public has bad reaction they still have time to make changes to the game.

Down the line when the devs are confident that aspects of the game wont go trough any more major iterations they can start to show gameplay.

Inherently all trailers are just marketing and the very fact you are commenting something here says that they have succeeded.

Moaning about cinematic trailers is like asking a cheff to show the steak while the animal is still grasing on the meadow.

  • I get where you are coming from, but cinematic trailers are not pointless.

Its easy to think that they are garbage meant to just invoke hype, but under the surface they are also meant to convey the story and set the setting.

Like now we know the game is going to be gritty, vicerall and even vulgar. Also looking at it, there is something connectin overconsuming and hedonism to suffering. I know that sounds something i might be intrested in so i will know in the future to look in to this game. And if somebody sees this and feels its not for them they know to stear clear from the game.

You really cant make the same impact using just the in game assets and engine larian is known for and in game development game can change a lot in short time. Basically if they show some gameplay mechanic in a trailer and post it on the internet they are tied to that mechanic and cant remove it. Untill things like ui components are set in stone, and abilibities they show are sure to be included, showing them has little to win and lot to loose.

What really pisses me off are trailers that try to trick you to think cinematic moments are done ingame engine. Or when the cinematic trailer does not match the games vibe (looking at you, dead island trailer)

  • Only thing i agree with you is that this is dumb.

Getting fine from public intoxication is just so weird concept for me. Especially when thinking some assbackwards places where its legal to carry a gun in public, but carrying open beer bottle is punishable.

Also drunk cyclist can be dangerous. If they collide with pedestarian or another cyclist there is good change for a hospital trip, or in extreme cases morgue. Especially now when e-bikes are more common.

Few years back some drunkard who was biking at the side of large road suddenly and without any signal crossed the road and allmost got hit by my car. I needed to pull over after that and wait for some time to get my hands stop shaking. If i would had bad brakes he would be dead and i would be traumatised, or if there would have been another car following me there would have been a crash.

Reason why i think its dumb is that if the punishment for driving a car and driving a bike is more or less the same, more people are going to choose the car.
