1·8 months agoThey do, but the way the fediverse works is that if someone else on your instance hasn’t already searched a community by pasting in its URL, it won’t show up in a normal integrated search, as it wouldn’t have federated to your instance (searching a community directly or subscribing initiates federation).
Lemmyverse doesn’t have that limitation, it crawls every instance and creates a complete list of every community across all instances, making its search very valuable.
but he is more worried if my sister gets to see this that she will simply quit my brother in law.
Thankfully he doesn’t have to worry about that, since your Sister already saw these texts last month.

I see you’re tweaking things this time though, refining the wording to… I don’t know, get the right sorta engagement?
Baffling why people go to this effort to create these little pieces of false drama, since there doesn’t seem to be a profit motive.
Just bored, I guess?

6·8 months agoA good way to find cool communities to subscribe to is searching topics that interest you on lemmyverse.net.
Once you have a good amount of subscriptions, you’ll have a pretty good time.
Alternatively, if you diligently block each community from /all that doesn’t interest you, the /all page also becomes pretty great to scroll.

1·8 months agoI think this is an essential watch for anyone living in the US, as it shows how effective civil disobedience and a general strike is against authoritarian oppression. It also highlights reasons the movement failed, to learn what not to do, or what to improve on.

Is this Instance Down?@infosec.pub•slrpnk.net down for good, apparently. Speculation they might return as a different platform (piefed)English
8·8 months agoAlt of Prodigalfrog@slrpnk.net here (slrpnk admin). As mentioned in the link Faythofdragons provided, the server unexpectantly went down when poVoq went on a work trip, and the failure was unfortunately in a way that requires physical access to fix.
We’re using this opportunity to consider a migration to piefed, but if that does not work out, we’ll simply continue to run the Lemmy instance. Either way, we will be back! :D
You can follow the progress of the piefed migration here: https://feddit.org/post/13823532

2·8 months agoAs an addendum, I will say I agree with the argument put forward in your link that pacifism is a death sentence against a government willing to kill en masse regardless of what effects it would have on the world stage.
I don’t think the USA is at the point where nonviolent methods are ineffective.

And look at Chile in 2019: https://itsgoingdown.org/submedia-presents-interrebellium-the-estallido-social/
They brought their authoritarian government to its knees with continued non violent (in the sense of lack of firearms) resistance combined with an effective general strike.
They ultimately failed because the liberal parts of the resistance fell for the reformist bait, but it demonstrated that you don’t need violence to win if you’re able to educate the movement that reform is a trap.

8·8 months agoPiefed also uses PostgreSQL. He was mentioning that the limiting factor on either platform is the DB, meaning that the parts written in Python will likely not be a limiting factor.
Piefed also has quite impressive optimizations in other areas as well compared to Lemmy or even Mbin.
