I suspect the devil is in the detail here. China is only the third largest supplier of auto parts overall at ~9%, after Mexico (41%) and Canada (10%). ¹ But for some particular vehicles, China is a much more significant supplier², and for some components, particularly components of EVs China is damn near the only supplier presently ³. Also this exemption seems to be set to decay over the next three years. This all reads to me as Trump making incentives for building out production for the worse kind of car that is less likely to grow in demand, and only putting those incentives in place for 3 years when it would take, like, 10 or 15 years to build the supply chain and production… All while locking us out of the fastest growing market for cars.

Great powers rearming will not be good for anyone no matter what the context is around it. After Napoleon, European leaders were so afraid of war between great powers that they avoided it for 100 years. The moment they let their guard up we got WW1. The weapons do not make us safer. We have to keep in mind that Europe needs to justify austerity for the citizens and rearmament for their militaries. I have no evidence of this, but I think it’s an entierly sensible read that the warning from Germany is an overstatement with that intent in mind.

You might be right, but I also submit that, when talking to Trump voters (older family members of me and my friends mostly), instead of “proving them wrong” about Trump, I’ve been redirecting the conversation toward “isn’t all that bad stuff the fault of rich people?”, and it has had a 100% success rate so far. They fucking hate the wealthy too. They ain’t waving the red flag, but I bet a lot more of them would vote for someone just to screw over the rich than most people think.
