Public transportation is non existent in a lot of the US and the cost of taking a cab is higher than a car payment. We have sprawling cities where if you don’t want to work a commute that would be 3+ hours each way you are precluded from most jobs and you better have 3-6 months of money saved to job search in your area at that point.
Millions of people are stuck in places where if you don’t have a car you’re going not going to finding much work or working a living wage.

So many gun laws exist today because Black Panthers doing cop watch. Basically they were across the street from police watching them during traffic stops with their guns out and it lead to a lot less people getting killed or mistreated during traffic stops. That’s kind of a simplified history of it.
In my area police made some policies that lasted for more than a decade about not patrolling a certain area and then needing to respond with a shitton of officers if there’s more than 2 people involved in a “potentially volatile situation” due to a bunch of people shaking a cop car and telling them to f off 20 years ago.
So blasting all quasi legal unmarked cops/ice isn’t realistic or necessarily what most 2A people advocate there’s plenty of history and merit in letting them know that people can potentially fight back, probably easier than you think to scare them considering a lot of the modern training is fear based

I always thought it was a major fuck you to veterans that the big state funded fireworks display where I live is launched like 10 feet from the veterans hospital where they have people living there and being treated for PTSD.
Also I worked second shift so driving home through low visibility “fog” a few hours after everyone stops shooting them off feels eerie when you live in a city that doesn’t get fog. That’s probably not good for breathing, but I don’t really know about just kind of being anecdotal

So the premise is supposed to be “don’t use phone” is supposed to magically turn into “healthy relationship with technology”? Yeah that doesn’t make sense on a fundamental level.
Try applying that logic elsewhere. Having an rocky relationship with your spouse? Just stop talking to them and it will be fixed. Genius solutions, or perhaps it’s not anything more than an excuse to control teens painted as something else

Also people aren’t necessarily able to monetize their interest in science. Maybe if there were no barriers like people needing to pay for education, food, shelter, transportation, medical care, and the air they breathe then maybe a larger portion of those people would be the mage they want to be or at least closer to it. As it stands you are right, but things can be different than they are right now

I feel that. Tried getting into my niche interests and hobbies, but they are dead on Lemmy. I think being cognizant of problems in the world isn’t a bad thing, but sometimes you don’t want news and I wish the spaces on Lemmy for other stuff weren’t so dead
They aren’t concerned primarily with employing people or crop yields, agribusiness is a business.
Your sentiment holds entirely if agriculture was entirely dependant on staple crops.
The plateau didn’t come out of nowhere. Staple crops are being pushed aside in favor of high margin crops for biofuel and luxury goods. Large agriculture still focuses on short term gains.
Profit per acre is going up. Businesses don’t care about increasing yield past a certain extent. If the business is set to profit and is currently profitable then all of these issues are non issues to the business.
The one in Panama actually makes sense because it is near the rainforest and acting as a buffer against them. These facilities only work if they are near the flies, you can’t use sterilized flies unless there is a population of flies to use them on.
When you put that together this almost looks like they are signaling plans to abandon support for the Panama facility and allow them to spread through all of South America up into Mexico.
