Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•So apparently full stops in texts are 'passive agressive' now. What other unwritten rules for texting have changed over the last couple of decades?
7·1 day agoYes! Preach! Same with new words. Every generation gets angry with the next generation using new words but you don’t get to decide how I use words. I will adhere to certain rules so we can keep understanding each other but all the members of the commission will have to be willing to rewrite the rules if the language has changed.
I’m running Home Assistant on mine at the moment. It’s amazing. Really. Apart from being an great smart home solution I’ve found it a good solution to create dashboards for life.
I have set up our family calendar, train schedules that change routes depending on the time. Waste collection notifications. It warns me to get a raincoat and umbrella in the morning. I get news headlines for my interests…
Before that I’ve tried a lot. It was my first step into home labbing 2 years ago. It brought me back to my youth. Breaking the family computer and trying to fix it before anyone noticing it.
Most of the stuff I ran used Docker.
- Joplin notes
- Mealie
- Immich
- Authentic
- Wanderer
- Homarr
- pihole
- portainer
Within a year I grew out of my pi setup and bought a second hand mini Lenovo that now runs Proxmox. Minor investment, huge upgrade. Moved away from dockers also.
The pi is a fun gateway drug.

Technology@lemmy.world•RAM is so expensive that stores are selling it at market pricesEnglish
261·27 days agoThat’s crap. They’ve loaded their stock on a certain price and they want to surf the high wave while they can.
Same for the Belgian implementation.
Why? I already have and use one for years. Most people in the privacy community have no issue with it.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•Does anyone actually have home safes or does everyone just use bank safes? (or do you hide stuff under your mattress?)

2·2 months agoWe have a free online storage that was founded by the notaries in my country. I think nearly all important legal documents have a copy that is kept by the government.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•Something that happened to you but no one believes you?
271·2 months agoI once got assaulted by three guys. I got pushed on the ground by surprise and instinct kicked in and I fought back. Kicked one guy in the ground so hard he had to get surgery and got one testicle removed, broke the other guy’s nose and the last one had a fractured skull.
They pushed assault charges on me and I got cleared because because they found CCTV footage of me going full Chuck Norris on these guys. The footage showed them teaming on me for no reason and I discovered one of them pulled out a knife.
I have a brown belt in classic jiu jitsu but it was the few months of Krav Maga that saved me.

Lemmy Shitpost@lemmy.world•Is it really worth the BS for a couple more years?
2·2 months agoGenerally, you not only live longer but you die with fewer complications. You can be sick for 20 years before you go or live in considerabel health until your last day. People with a healthy life style get sick too but they just have lower odds of getting terminally Ill.

17·2 months agoI was raised in a bar. My mother owned it for 40 years. Yes, same customers every day. They were all alcoholist but some of them stopped functioning. My mother Fed them, did their taxes, cut their hair. It’s terrible and sad. The functioning alcoholists had a family to turn home to. I used to be an alcoholist until 10 years ago. My wife had to make me realise that drinking every day, even just one beer a day, is alcoholism.

1·2 months agoWe did a family introduction in a local aquarium and it was amazing. I had a something strange happen to me afterwards. I stopped breathing from time to time. Weird, because rule number one is “keep breathing”.
It started at work where I got the feeling I was suffocating only to realise I was holding my breath unconsciously. I had a constant feeling of being out of breath and only felt good I if I was conscious about breathing. Took me a bit of therapy to get it sorted out. Therapist figured that the dive triggered something in me.

Belgian here. I have one at the door every year. I make it with my children around the first of December. The table top wreath is still a thing in my mothers’ place. She’s 70.
We have an advent calendar which is a box with small doors. Every day the kids open one door and get the treat or trinket behind the door. They are 16 and 18 but insist on tge tradition to be kept.
