Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•People who have permanently moved to another country, what gave you the opportunity and was it worth it?
10·3 months agoDo you want to elaborate?
I am happy for you, but you are also wrong. Yellow is awful.

Autism@lemmy.world•Can anyone academically gifted confirm?
10·3 months agoI’m in my mid-fourties and my brain doesn’t to have received that memo…

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What's something that, after you had it, you immediately wanted another?
7·3 months agoI feel you. I took a very low dose of MDMA at a festival and I was euphoric or hight or anything. But for the first time in ever I had no filter issues. All the noises that drive me crazy all the time, just didn’t bother me. Same with touch. It just cured it. For one evening.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What's something that, after you had it, you immediately wanted another?
12·4 months agoA couple of mentions for cocaine here, but for me it was MDMA. I never understood how you could get addicted to anything until I was at the club and I really really really wanted another line of that love powder and immediately decided to never do it again. Then I did it again.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•Is it normal to not be able to remember anything during burnout?
9·5 months agoIt could get pretty bad pretty fast if you are not careful. Been in the situation a couple of times, thinking “meh. I will push through it”. And then it got ugly. Please take care of yourself and take all the help you can get.

Mildly Infuriating@lemmy.world•Especially the Ø...English
4·5 months agoI’m a German that uses an US keyboard with the US intl layout. I think it solves all of my keyboard needs: I have the benefits of the US layout for programming and access to all common umlauts.r RAlt+S = ẞ e.g. https://de.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tastaturbelegung_US-International

Parenting@lemmy.world•Am I supposed to be enjoying any of this?
2·6 months agoAnd of those 30 people no one said “Are you sure? Because if you are not, don’t do it.” I mean, I believe you, but that’s cruel. There’s no magic instinct thing that will come over every parent immediately, once they hold their child for the first time. And those people should have known this! Still, they encouraged you to do one of the toughest and life altering things possible and promised you, that you would love it. You won’t. Maybe you never will.
But you can still love your kid, even if you don’t like being a parent. I know fathers who didn’t want to be a parent, but they did their best regardless and now love their kids very much. They still loathe being a parent though.
First year is the toughest in my experience. It gets better. It will never get easy. Find other parents with similar experiences. You are absolutely not alone in this.
My father taught me that song as a kid:
Warte, warte nur ein Weilchen, bald kommt Haarmann auch zu dir, mit dem kleinen Hackebeilchen, macht er Schabefleisch aus dir.
But since he went to an English school, he also taught me English songs and nursery rhymes and I am having so much fun at therapy.

No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•Could I seek asylum as a US trans person in Costa Rica (or other countries)?
2·6 months agoI’d disagree. We are definitely not rich. All they ask for, is that you can prove that you are able to support yourself. If you have a job, that’s enough.

No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•Could I seek asylum as a US trans person in Costa Rica (or other countries)?
3·6 months agoI used to live in Berlin and while it’s not perfect, it has a vibrant LGBTQ+ scene and I’d say it’s still much better than the US.

No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•Could I seek asylum as a US trans person in Costa Rica (or other countries)?
2·6 months agoI know. I live here. Should have said “EU and some other countries in Europe that are technically not in the EU” but I didn’t think about it.

No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•Could I seek asylum as a US trans person in Costa Rica (or other countries)?
15·6 months agoEverywhere in the EU is probably more safe than the US. We have pretty good protection for trans people and we all speak English (well, most of us). You could try Switzerland https://www.eda.admin.ch/countries/usa/en/home/visa.html and I suggest going to Bern as it’s quite liberal. Excellent health care system. Expensive though, but also good wages. Germany is cheaper and in the bigger cities you’ll be just fine. Good luck!

Linguistics@mander.xyz•One Standard German Axiom - is this plausible?
3·7 months agoNot a linguist, but a German. As far as I know, this is correct. One dialect has become standard or high German and everything else is considered a dialect.
Swiss German is a completely different beast and here no dialect has become the defacto standard. But German is only one of the four official languages of Switzerland.

Buy European@feddit.uk•Instead of just proposing replacements, what are some unique soft drinks from your country? This is chinotto, an Italian soda made with a citrus similar to bitter orange called chinotto
3·8 months agoSince moving to Switzerland a year ago I fell in love with ice tea. But I just buy the cold brew tea from Aldi and add a bit of sirup, mint and lemon rind.
Exactly! I mean, my son has an autism diagnosis, and my wife has ADS, and my best friend has both, and I work in a field where almost everyone is diagnosed with something, but surely I am normal, because no one diagnosed me. Yet.

No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•What are some FOSS programs that are objectively better than their proprietary counterparts?
4·9 months agoLogseq is the best note taking app for me. And a lot of my programmer/adhd colleagues. I cannot keep order in my notes and logseq does it for me. It’s so essential for my workflow that I have a monthly donation to the project set up.

No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•What are some FOSS programs that are objectively better than their proprietary counterparts?
2·9 months agoI have multiple different graphs/vaults/whatever synced by simply storing the markdown files in a synced folder and I never had any issues. The new version of logseq is supposed to use a database and syncing, afaik.

Well, of course we need to preserve these 2510 gold coins for future generations!
