Showerthoughts@lemmy.world•Media zombies would be largely harmless if they lacked teeth and claws.
1·4 days agoI remember back in school how they told us that jumping from the Golden Gate bridge would definitely kill you. In all that time since, I have not died from jumping off the bridge. I have never jumped off the bridge, but I have also never died from jumping off the bridge. So, now I think I was being lied to.
I’m glad they started putting up No Helicopter signs at the entrance to the tunnel near me. I think the local henchmen got so used to chasing people through them that they would sometimes get distracted and absent mindedly take the tunnel on their commute to work.

6·4 days agoOver 7 million deaths confirmed to be directly caused by covid. And that’s with states and entire countries lying about the number of covid deaths. It’s actually between 19 and 36 million if we analyze the actual total number of excess deaths.
And that was with most countries attempting to minimize people’s exposure.
I don’t really want to know what you would call a catastrophe if somewhere between 7,000,000 and 36,000,000 dead humans doesn’t qualify.
Unfortunately, it’s not just Kursgesagt Hentai.
It only Kursgesagt and Rick and Morty Hentai.
~Actually, curiosity got the better of me and after taking a brief look, there is Kursgesagt Hentai. I just really don’t want to interact with it anymore than I already have.~
The church was a place where wealthy families could “hide away” male children who were problematic.
They could literally pay for a position like being a bishop.
I too have a thing for goth girls.

memes@lemmy.world•Merry Christmas to all the parents who are currently cleaning up mountains of wrapping paper
4·14 days agoMy mom wasn’t quite that bad, but we do have heirloom cardboard boxes and tissue paper for wrapping clothing. You always knew if you saw that shape under the tree that someone was getting clothes. My sister inherited the boxes and they still make the occasional appearance at family get togethers. Meanwhile I inherited the need to flatten, fold, and store tissue paper that is still whole.

A Boring Dystopia@lemmy.world•Santa rounds up migrants for ICE in Trump administration’s Christmas-themed AI video
2·14 days agoAnd yet he still just barely won. The election was rigged in so many ways, and 1/3 of the voting population were stupid/hateful enough to vote against their own interests for a candidate who was straight up promoting fascism and Nazi ideals. Even with all that, he won by less than the number of idiots that got talked into either not voting or into “teaching the Democrats a lesson”.
It’s almost like all those people preaching nihilism and righteous indignation were actually Trump supporters/operatives all along.
It turns out that the witch who turned the prince into a frog was actually curing his cancer not cursing him.
Doesn’t the second coming of Christ signal the end of the world? Maybe he is more correct than you think.
It’s because some of us used to be taught that when writing a letter (like with actual paper and pen or typewriter), you should always use a formal tone. Sometimes the sign off was longer than the actual letter:
*with the most profound respect, and with assurances of my highest consideration, your most obedient, most humble, and most devoted servant,I have the honour to subscribe myself, Sir/Madam, your faithful and dutiful correspondent,
Respectfully and with sincere esteem, Mr Test_Tickles Esquire III*
Of course I’m being a little hyperbolic there, you get the idea. Once email appeared, people just weren’t going to do that shit anymore. But at the same time you don’t want to see me rude or angry, so you throw on a … to indicate all that other shit that we both know I’m supposed to write but I just don’t want to, but that’s cool because you don’t want to read it anyways.
Only if you are super poor enough to qualify, and have time and the capacity to jump through all the hoops to get one, and you live somewhere that there is a provider that has coverage, and ect, ect., then you can get a discount on your cell plan. For some people who are “lucky enough” to be super poor enough, the discount can actually be enough to make the phone essentially $0.

Science Memes@mander.xyz•Let's stick with just the one observer from now on, thenEnglish
3·29 days agoI once had it explained to me in a way that finally clicked:
What if beings from the 42nd dimension wanted to observe life on our planet? The problem is that they’re from the 42nd dimension, so they can’t just sit and “watch” us in our basic four-dimensional world. However, what they can do is stir up electrons in our atmosphere until they start a lightning storm. Then they can “observe” the lightning. It turns out that they can learn a lot from the lightning itself, but at the same time it may have some effect on life here on Earth.
At first I was 100% behind your argument, but then I thought about the current GOP… And now I am thinking maybe being raised by machines would not be bad.

You are kind of right but your focus is way too narrow and short-sighted. The better off people around me are, the better off I am. Society is what brings me the comforts and freedoms I have today. Without society I would likely be some peasant living in a hut and trying to farm some desolate piece of land until I died at a very early age.
By donating to medical research, I am able to improve medical care for all, and that includes myself. By donating to the arts I get to see art that I would have never been able to see otherwise. By donating to the poor and things like education, I reduce crime and violence where I live.
So yeah, basically everything you do is self-serving, just try not to be such a basic bitch about the scope of your actions.
