Ask Science@lemmy.world•Has there ever been a viable alternative to the phsycialist model of the universe?English
9·28 days agoSo the thing is, like other commenters have said, you’re asking metaphysics things through the prism of science, which does not work because by nature, science uses the (mostly) objective scientific method, while metaphysics is based on subjective assessments.
You have to separate the physical, material universe as being in the domain of what can be known, from the rest, which can not be, and never will. This does not mean it doesn’t exist, just that it can never be studied or proved in any way, so anyone can believe what they wish about it without leaving rationality (as long as the belief does not imply things concerning the material universe)

Fuck Cars@lemmy.world•Boy, 11, Is Killed in Road Rage ShootingEnglish
352·2 months agoThis community is related to basically anything negative regarding cars. As such road rage is very much qualified, as it’s a very much car-induced problem, both directly (as in people in cars are implicated) and more indirectly (as in car-first infrastructure is bad for everybody involved, including cars, and pushes for this sort of things to keep happening)

News@lemmy.world•Lengthy Execution by Nitrogen Gas in Alabama Renews Concerns Over Method
7·2 months agoIf I recall correctly, the main problem with nitrogen execution (apart from the death penalty itself) is that they do it very badly, as in they don’t vent the CO2 gas, and the inmate painfully suffocates

Depends on the scale. Really tiny microorganism living in the air do not fly, as in they have no active mecanism to physically interact with their environment to move in any way. They just follow the air currents at seemingly random (the exact word is brownian), kinf of like particles of dust that you see in a ray of light. It is not defined as flying and not studied as such
Yeah I understood after, hence my very fast edit to add the last sentence about flies existing only from around 245 my
Insects fly the same as birds and aeroplanes do, they create air flow around a rounded wing edge, wich causes the air upward of the wing to flow faster than the air under, thus creating a lifting force. And to answer origins, to our knowledge insects were by far the first living flying things, around 300 million years ago with dragonfly relatives. And the group including flies (diptera) came much later, around 240 million years ago !

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•Which is worse: drunk driving or illegal street racing?
20·3 months agoWhy are you still trying to get people say that street racing is OK ? You tried several times, framed the question many ways, and are reduced to comparing it to another terrible selfish behaviour to try and have a smidgen of validation… That’s kind of sad actually, when you ask questions, you should have the courage to face any answer, not just the one you wished for, and respect that

My guess would be better approximation as you avoid a “fluke”, as 8 second is a very short time where nothing could easily happen even with crickets being present

8·7 months agoPricetag sets expectations, simple as that. It is documented that no matter the product, people have more trust in a more expensive product than a cheaper one, even if they are actually identical. And thus, people also rightfully expect more of a more expensive product. Let’s talk about cars for example : if I buy an old overused small one just to get from point A to point B, I’ll be absolutely satisfied if I paid a few hundred bucks, and absolutely not if I paid a few thousands.
Same with games, if I have a small indie game entertain me somewhat for a few hours, I’ll be super okay if it cost me a few bucks, and super not ok if it cost me 60 or 80 euros. The intrinsic quality may not change, but that was never what was discussed in the first place.

And to you too, good fellow!
