  • Home Assistant! I got a cheap refurbished mini PC for 60 bucks and a zigbee stick for 12 or so, been running HA for a year now, it works very well and pairs perfectly with the IKEA zigbee stuff. I have it read the alarm from my phone and turn on radio on a wifi speaker and smart lights at that time. Kitchen light is now automatic with a little motion sensor and ESP I got from AliExpress for a few bucks. Everything is completely local, no internet access. It’s great!

  • My opinion is different from most other comments here. AI is a tool. If it gets the job done exactly the way you intended it, there is no problem in using it. In my opinion, it’s only slop if it’s generated mindlessly and without care. In your case, you gave very specific constraints. If the result is exactly what you intended it to be, if you can get behind it 100%, it is your art, it is not slop. I think people need to reflect on their definition of art a bit. There was a time when people claimed using Photoshop made your art unworthy. The new tool is now AI. Just because it makes creating something so easy doesn’t mean a tool is not “allowed” in art. Actually, anything is allowed in art, there are no rules.

  • To be honest, if it’s a job I really wanted, I would definitely do it (and have done in the past, even for a job I wasn’t sure I wanted - actually got it and then declined the offer in the end). It’s something you’ll spend 40 hours every week of your life with. In my opinion it makes sense to invest some time beforehand for both sides to make sure it’s a good fit. Otherwise nobody will be happy long term.

  • I think the only time I ever properly watched something while doing something else was when I had to do incredibly monotonous measurements in the lab, holding a little sensor to random positions on an object, for hours, so I watched LOL while doing that. Since both activities required less than half of my brain, it was fine.

Sometimes I watch YouTube videos while doing something else like playing a game that doesn’t always require full attention, or editing photos. But only if there isn’t much going on visually anyway and I’m mostly listening.

I would never watch a movie and do something else simultaneously. Movies are a main focus thing.

  • Yes. Every improvement is good. But I think it’s important not to forget, and to also remind people, that there are even better alternatives, and questioning something that people have “always” done is actually possible. Social values are constantly evolving, and in my opinion we should move towards de-normalizing hurting animals. They are sentient beings, and causing them suffering for our own entertainment should be discouraged.
