When CPUs were a lot slower you could genuinely get noticeable performance improvements by compiling packages yourself, but nowadays the overhead from running pre-compiled binaries is negligible.
Hell, even Gentoo optionally offers binary packages now.
Now imagine the same meme but with Gentoo and LFS
Made in Abyss would be a 10/10 show but it has enough weird shit like this unnecessarily crammed into it that I cannot recommend it to anyone.
From what I’ve heard the anime even toned it down compared to the manga. Considering what made it in, I don’t even want to know what got cut.

One place will have “ultimate spicy ghost pepper death sauce, you will literally die” and it’s mild as fuck
And then you go to the local Thai place down the road, and the 3/5 star heat level will absolutely kick your ass

linuxmemes@lemmy.world•Running Plasma instead of Gnome for the first time in yearsEnglish
1·11 months agoIronically most of my customization so far has been to make it more like Gnome lmao
Still trying to figure out how to make workspaces/virtual desktops more…usable.
Overall though it’s amazing how solid Plasma is now, it sure as hell isn’t the buggy mess it used to be in the earlier Plasma 5 days.
I also do this with word definitions all the time.

29·11 months agoI started using FreshRSS around the same time Reddit killed their API, it has rapidly become one of my favorite self-hosted apps.
Also,
open source software releases I follow
You have just taught me that I can add github release pages to my feed, I love FreshRSS even more now.

1·1 year agoit’ll usually be the artist’s name. Like if you search for “Taylor Swift”, you’ll get exactly zero results because that phrase is blacklisted due to a complaint from the label. If you instead search for a specific song, you will see results, and can work backwards from there to find the album you’re looking for.
This website has a decent summary: https://manjarno.pages.dev/
TL:DR: Repeated dumb mistakes that a (relatively) big distro like Manjaro should not be making. Haven’t heard any drama in the past year or so though, so maybe they’ve finally gotten their act together. Time will tell.
For as much as Linux nerds (myself absolutely included) complain about distros like Ubuntu and Manjaro, I’d still take either one over Windows or MacOS any day.

Fediverse@lemmy.world•Lemmy wouldn't really takeoff to replace Reddit until it's content is search indexableEnglish
4·1 year agoYeah, I think that’s definitely one of the roadblocks Lemmy is facing at the moment. Even though I deleted my Reddit account after the API nonsense, I’m absolutely still appending every DDG or Startpage search with “reddit.” Especially with the flood of AI-generated garbage filling search results, it’s the easiest way to get quick answers from (probably) real people.
However, that also relates to Reddit’s other advantage, in that it actually has a decade and a half of content to be indexed in the first place. The magic of Reddit is that every question has been asked in every way at least 5 times over, Lemmy just doesn’t have that history yet.
I live in hell (i.e., Arizona), can confirm.

As someone who was home-schooled, I absolutely agree with Cosmonaut Star. I dodged the alt-right insanity of modern homeschooling, but I got the “okay sit here and do learning unsupervised for a while” treatment after I turned 11 or 12. Prior to then I feel like my parents did an okay job at making sure I was keeping up with normal kids and taking me to social gatherings and stuff, but that just gradually slipped away the older I got. I feel like I’m still unpacking mental baggage from basically not having a life in my teens.
Thank fuck I got into self-hosting, networking, and Linux/BSD stuff in general as a hobby otherwise I would have zero marketable skills for a job.
I’m not saying it wasn’t safe, it’s just perhaps not quite as safe as some of the other ones. Some of them are built so that they don’t fall over at all.
Nio has seemingly been successful with battery swap stations in their cars, so luckily the concept hasn’t been completely abandoned.

I’m trying to sneak around, but I’m dummy thicc and the clap of my asscheeks keeps alerting the earthlings.
