Privacy@lemmy.world•Signal, encryption and backdoorsEnglish
2·4 months agoYeah I know that but for me that’s where it gets interesting. It doesn’t really matter to me what others do And in a privacy community you can expect that at least we bother with those things. And whether or not my advanced data protection really is proper E2EE that’s where it gets interesting imo.
Not trying to antagonize you because I consider us in the same team, just saying that with this is kinda the same as with crypto wallets: not your key, not your wallet (or in this case, not encrypted). If I just rely on Apples default settings then yeah I consider that compromised.

1·4 months agoGot it but they also say
If you enable Advanced Data Protection and then lose access to your account, Apple will not have the encryption keys to help you recover it — you’ll need to use your device passcode or password, a recovery contact, or a personal recovery key. Because the majority of your iCloud data will be protected by end-to-end encryption, you’ll be guided to set up at least one recovery contact or recovery key before you turn on Advanced Data Protection. You must also update all of your Apple devices to a software version that supports this feature. You can turn off Advanced Data Protection at any time. Your device will securely upload the required encryption keys to Apple servers and your account will once again use standard data protection.
Since they are closed source there is no way for me to verify that’s true, but that’s also not exactly in line with what you’re saying.

1·4 months agoNot that it’d surprise me, but where did Apple admit that they store the keys in the same cloud?
Also, not that I believe them, but what they communicate when you encrypt is that they don’t have that key and if you lose it it’s gone.

92·4 months agoI speak Arabic and the saying you’re looking for is أنا احب أبوس الحمير which roughly translates to "I love eating candy“ although it’s not directly possible to translate as Arabic is a very metaphorical language.
The reason why the man was emphasizing his love for candy is, simply put, biological. Through evolution, our brains developed strong reward pathways—primarily involving dopamine release—in response to sugar, as it was a high-energy, survival-critical food source for our ancestors, making its consumption biologically pleasurable and motivating.

12·5 months agoYeah I mean Qatar is a dictatorship. When it comes to non-domestic news they’re a surprisingly centrist source up to journalist standards but when it comes to anything related to Qatar of course they’re not gonna be critical.
Weirdly enough this used to be something western countries rightfully criticized, but nowadays this criticism is hypocritical given the whole Palestine situation.
That being said this is of course super fucked up.

1·5 months agoYeah and this is one is supported by the UAE who are oh so Muslim don’t give a damn about their fellow human beings, and of course they were one of those countries trying to normalize the relationship with Israel along with Saudi Arabia.
I feel for Sudan so much, Sudanese people are incredibly warm and kind it’s a tragedy that they’re being silently starved and murdered and raped. And then to add insult to injury you got these Zionists who treat Sudanese people and any other POC like shit but then pretend to care so that they can use them for their whataboutism.

Funny that you bring that up. Most of Africa and West Asia got colonized when Victorian England was at its prudest point. They "civilized“ the “savages” and taught them their Victorian moral values. This has a lasting influence until today. While you consider yourself civilized and educated and those others are the backwards ideas, in reality while your ancestors were living off their wealth they had the capacity to think about luxury like human rights (I’m sorry, it shouldn’t be a luxury, but it is), while the colonized were busy trying to survive.
