caos@feddit.orgto Fediverse@lemmy.world•Did you know? Lemmy instances with *key instances!English6·1 month agoIs this like Tumblr or something?
I think Misskey and its forks are among the Fediverse services that are not modelled on a specific commercial platform, but have created something completely their own.
The forks differ in details (see comparison), but the user experience is relatively similar.
Not directly for Lemmy, but the song from feddit.org was at least created directly from the Fediverse, i.e. by Fediverse users to support a campaign started in the Fediverse.
Hubzilla (macroblogging service in the Fediverse) can also be used to create and collaborate on wikis.
I can only find a German-language manual for this right away: https://help.hubzilla.hu/benutzerhandbuch/wikis.html
caos@feddit.orgto Fediverse@lemmy.world•Is it worth using bookwyrm over open library?English8·2 months agoOpen Library is the main data source for Bookwyrm for book data. Bookwyrm is an application in the Fediverse that can be used to find and write reviews of books. I wouldn’t see that as a contradiction.
“Also I’ve started a Friendica manual at https://help.friendica.onl/ but it needs to get content.”
Maybe you may translate some content from this guide: https://friendica-hilfe.gitbook.io/friendica-hilfe ?
Most of the functions should be instance-independent (although loma.ml has activated many add-ons)
The article in the JoinFediverseWiki is very short. It could be expanded a little. I used to have an editor account for the wiki, maybe I’ll find the time to reactivate it.
The mastodon apps work, but generally only offer the mastodon functions. Fedilab may offer a little more.
There is also Dhaaga: A "client for various social networking platforms and protocols.
🩵 Bluesky 💙 Mastodon 💚 Misskey 💛 Pleroma 🩷 Sharkey 🧡 Cherrypick 💜 Akkoma"
edit: sorry, forgot to read that you are looking for iOs
There is already a more up-to-date version of the second graphic (including mbin and loops):
caos@feddit.orgto Fediverse@lemmy.world•How should I be accessing the fediverse to get the most "federated" experienceEnglish3·4 months agoYes, Lemmy accounts can only follow/subscribe to groups (besides Lemmy also mbin, piefed + also Peertube), but not individual accounts. A Lemmy account can only communicate with individual accounts if they write something in a community. That is one of the aims of mbin, to connect them: The structure of communities /magazines + a microblog feed.
caos@feddit.orgto Fediverse@lemmy.world•What tech skills are needed to host Fediverse platforms for a community of people?English2·4 months agoAre you sure this is a serious offer? This seems suspicious to me: “If you do not want or do not care about having your own server, but still want to be part of the fediverse. With these service packages you get an account at our flagship instances at a low cost. Share a group package with your friends and make it even cheaper!”
Do I understand correctly that you have to pay 29.99 just to get an account on their “flagship instance”? or how is it to be understood?
caos@feddit.orgto Fediverse@lemmy.world•What tech skills are needed to host Fediverse platforms for a community of people?English2·4 months agoThere’s also Managed Hosting: Hosting a Fediverse instance (a list of providers): “However, there are hosting companies that can take care of the installation and technical maintenance for you. You get a pre-installed application, mainly Mastodon, which is also technically maintained. You yourself are an admin and can do some things in the application’s admin menu, such as manage your own users. This way, you can also allow a larger group of people to access the Fediverse.”
caos@feddit.orgto Fediverse@lemmy.world•Is there any diaspora* to activitypub bridge?English7·4 months agoNo, between Diaspora and the Fediverse there are only connections to Friendica and Hubzilla, as those can run several protocols, including the Diaspora protocol in addition to AP.
caos@feddit.orgOPto Fediverse@lemmy.world•"The Crafter's Guide To The Fediverse" (Video)English2·4 months agoHowever, this video is almost a year old. But I think it is still essentially up to date.

caos@feddit.orgOPto Fediverse@lemmy.world•"The Crafter's Guide To The Fediverse" (Video)English20·4 months agoThis is a really good introductory video that explains the Fediverse. Very clear, good examples and for a target group with no prior knowledge. So if you want to recommend other people to join the Fediverse, this might be a good start. There are insights into Mastodon and Pixelfed in particular… but Lemmy is also a topic in the video… (Thank you @thegiddystitcher@lemm.ee !)
caos@feddit.orgto Fediverse@lemmy.world•Friendica Has Reached 2,646 Monthly Active UsersEnglish20·4 months agoLet’s hope that there are also a few organisations that run Friendica instances so that the offer becomes a bit bigger. In the last two years, everyone has been totally fixated on Mastodon and many have opened a Mastodon server without realising that there were other options.
The Channels in Friendica are similar to the “antennas” / “newspickers” in Misskey / Sharkey. Both are very good ways to receive content sorted by self-defined topics.
If you are looking for a way to *send *to different topics, Friendica’s (connected) “accounts” would be suitable for this, But Hubzilla offers more options for this
“Friendica - the BlueSky integration…”
Friendica offers a connector for Tumblr as well as for Bluesky. Ad hoc I can only find a German-language manual for it: https://friendica-hilfe.gitbook.io/friendica-hilfe/basics/bluesky-tumblr-und-weitere-social-media-dienste
Hubzilla certainly has the most options for privacy. But it is ‘not perfect’. More detailed here (in German):
"Full disclosure: The encryption that hubzilla uses by default is not absolutely watertight. There are known methods to circumvent it. However, this is very time-consuming and has to be done individually for each channel. And to be clear: Other services store your messages in plain text, so we see this approach as a significant improvement for your privacy. Furthermore, you are always free to use additional encryption and password protection if you wish. To explain this in more detail:
- each channel has its own key pair
- every non-public post is automatically encrypted
- optional password protection for content via crypto javascript, browser-to-browser encryption (must be enabled in settings) Full disclosure: A malicious hub administrator could inject malicious javascript code (e.g. keylogging capabilities) into the code. Encrypt our data with GPG, become a hub administrator yourself, or use other means of communication if that bothers you.
So what is the scope of security? To put it bluntly, it may be great, but it’s not perfect."
If you select ‘Forum Discussions’ under ‘What type of content do you want to see or share?’, NodeBB, Lemmy, mbin, Piefed and Lotide are then recommended. That fits well.
But if you select ‘Social Media Post + ’Forum Discussions", Mastodon, Misskey and other microblogging services are recommended, as well as Lemmy. But not mbin, which actually offers exactly this combination, and also not Friendica, which can do micro-/macroblogging, but also offers forums/groups and federates best with both directions.
So it’s perhaps a little under-complex, but nicely done and a good new contact point for interested people.
