Nimo@lemmy.worldOPto Horror Lit - Books Reviews, News and Discussions@lemmy.world•It's not the horror but the sex scenes that disturb meEnglish1·1 year agoI would agree that Apt Pupil is a highly disturbing fucked up story - which covers a number of themes. But is it honestly a great piece of horror? No. King relies far too much on the shock element, which I’m fine with this - sometimes I want to be grossed our. Todd’s wet dream as I have alluded already was pretty awkward - but there is some relatablity, admittedly I have never to my knowledge had one while fantasying about the holocaust it did bring home the memories of my first time - the confusion of what I had dreamt and waking up feeling sticky and not fully realising what it was resurfaced those emotions.
As for the depiction of madness, yes the graphic nature takes some beating but it’s weak on psychology. If you want to explore the slide to madness I urge you to read either the The Brothers Karamazov or Crime and Punishment.

(and for the record the post was largely tongue in cheek).

Psychomech is the first of three books which sees Garrison enter further into this strange, trippy world of physical and mental transformations.
My favourite scene from that film…
Gosh - it must be at least five years ago. The technological evolution from then to now has been unprecedented.
Nimo@lemmy.worldOPto Spiders@lemmy.world•A cellar spider carrying her eggs - some of which seem to be fully formed.1·1 year agoA good question. Cellar spiders [Pholcus phalangioides] do exhibit some cannibalistic behavior, but eating their mothers is not typical. Instead, these spiders are known to be opportunistic predators, often feeding on a variety of small insects and other spiders. Cannibalism among siblings can occur, particularly if food is scarce, but the specific behavior of spiderlings consuming their mother is not characteristic of this species.
