You Should Know@lemmy.world•YSK: Albert Einstein wrote about Socialism, and specifically calls out issues with the version proposed by technocrats.
2·6 days agoYeah, that was definitely a smart move.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•If you could add one book to the required reading curriculum for people under 18, what would it be?
1·9 days agoHa, yes, certainly got plenty of disdain for the world. I’ll give it another go 👍

No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•How come Netflix removed the N from their shows, kind of make it seem like they borrow all the stuff? I usually use it for a segway into other shows/movies not made by them?
12·9 days agoI think OP was saying the opposite. They use(d) the N to avoid Netflix originals. Which may also be an answer as to why they have (apparently) removed it.
Seems better to me though, the N was annoying, and there have been some very good Netflix originals, so it’d be a shame if people refused to even consider them on that basis alone.

Today I Learned@lemmy.world•TIL why María Corina Machado is relevant in the whole Venezuela thingEnglish
2·10 days agoAlthough Time’s Man (now Person) of the Year is about who has had the most impact in a given year, it’s not meant to be an honour or endorsement of the person chosen, or at least not officially. Not is it something Hitler “won”. He was named it.
In their wording, he was "the newsmaker who most influenced world events for better or worse” in that year (1938), which tbh is hard to argue with.
From this article about it,
Time named Hitler 1938’s Man of the Year in its Jan. 2, 1939, issue, whose cover illustration, did not feature the portrait of Hitler in the circulating posts, but rather a black-and-white drawing depicting Hitler as a small figure playing a large organ with the caption: “From the unholy organist, a hymn of hate.”

No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•I am so scared of nuclear war, how do I cope with it?
2·12 days agoAs long as you are not in major target city … you will be fine.
That seems pretty complacent tbh.
First of all even just the top 30 cities in the US are home to about 41 million people. Which seems a lot of folk to simply write off.
Also, the destruction of the major cities would cause huge/complete economic, social, infrastructural and legal collapse for the rest of the country.
Plus, even for those outside the immediate blast radius, there’d be the massive environmental impact of pollution to land and water, not least the potential for a nuclear winter killing off crops, and then animals.
Turns out my house was outside the blast radius if the base was nuked.
Without knowing the size of the bomb, how could you know you would be outside it? Not that blast radius is all that matters anyway.

No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•Why didn't Venezuela move its capital further away from the ocean to make the government more resilliant to capitulation?
17·13 days agoIt’s not at all uncommon for major cities to be on or near bodies of water, eg London, LA, NYC, Sydney, Tokyo, Rio, etc. It’s a facilitator to (and outcome of) trade/travel and also can be a source of food and water (for cities on rivers/lakes, obviously).
And it’s also not uncommon for major cities to become capital cities.
Not really surprising that as a country with one coastline, they have their capital so close to the sea.

No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•Why do SO MANY reviews now talk about "phone wobble"?
9·13 days agoThe majority of phone reviewers (and modern tech reviewers in general) get their review units for free so they lack that feeling and awareness that comes with spending $1000+ of their own money on a new device.
Agreed, but if I ever spent a 1000 bucks on any product, I’d expect it to be able to sit in a usable position without wobbling.
I’m glad they’re highlighting this - the more the better until phone design is improved to eliminate such a stupid flaw.
That is awesome. Bravo!

No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•If God (or any creator of the universe) exists would he be made out of atoms?
6·14 days agoIn the way that this supreme power would exist, there is no way for us to quantify it.
So, dark matter, then?

Nah, the Bears should definitely rest their best players, and I have no ulterior motive for (go Niners!) saying so.
Great song too. And a pretty decent spy agency. On their day.
Oh, that’s a shame. It’s really tremendously useful. Probably a third party app that could replicate it, but I’m not sure.

Blimey, that sounds like a really effective weapon…
…oh. Never mind.
