    National Gay Task Force v. Board of Education of the City of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, 729 F.2d 1270 (10th Cir. 1984), was a decision by the Court of Appeals for the Tenth Circuit that upheld in part, and struck down in part, a law allowing schools to fire teachers for public homosexual conduct. It was the first federal appellate court decision to deny that sexual orientation is a suspect classification. It was affirmed by an equally divided vote in the United States Supreme Court.

    Tbf, being a gay teacher ain’t that much better in OK today.

    The difference here though I guess - is that people are taking sides. Showing up. Supporting.

    I think a lot of LGBTQ people especially are drawn to education. Many of us went through very difficult K12 experiences. The ones who enjoyed the academics - for whom math or English class was a haven in a rocky world - we feel called to help children. We feel called to give them that little safe space. To put up just a single sticker that says “I will call you by the name you wish me to. I will respect you. I will love you.”

    This above all is why the narrative is so hard to understand, so twisted. The idea that we are predators. I love every child I have worked with. The ones that hated me, the ones that treated me like garbage, the ones that called me slurs. My queerness did impact my decision to go into education - but because I know that STEM and the arts are places where what you can do will always be greater than what you are. I may be a gay trans man, but I can use laplace transformations to solve a differential equations. I can give this to anyone who asks - why would I not want to at least try to liberate as many children as I can?

    I just wish being queer was a non factor. I wish no one cared. I wish I was planning a summer of traveling from city to city setting up free science booths and my uterus was something that only my doctor cared about.

    FYI for anyone not in the know, this is the Good Good Good Newspaper advertised by Hank Green

    It only consists of “good” news and is very uplifting - generally every print edition features some kind of theme like “animals” or “medicine” or “art”

    If you can afford to support, I think it’s a great way to encourage more uplifting news in our world

      Well, that turned sour quickly.
      If you click “newsletter” it’s just text about it, no link or anything to sign up on that page. So you click “subscribe” in the menu and it says “digital - free” but when you make and account it then tells you only the first one is free, after that it’s $5 a month, and they need your payment information to even get the free one. I understand they need to make money, but don’t lie and say something is free when it isn’t. There was absolutely nothing saying it isn’t free before you make your account and it sends you directly to add payment info. Not good, left immediately and won’t be back.

      Edit: I tried it in another browser and now see small grey text saying it’s $5 a month below the big “Digital - Free”. That feels consciously designed to make you miss it.

        Personally I give them credit for not (as far as I can tell) having articles behind a paywall, and having a working rss feed, though dark patterns are always a minus

          Some people think Trump winning was good news.

          So, good news is relative. I’m not making any comment about my personal views—which is probably not what you think based on your uncivil reply.

          What’s even better news is that I have no idea what a “tag” is, and I use Voyager as my Lemmy client which allows me to hide the voting system entirely—so I don’t ever see what anyone thinks.

            Not the other dude and only weighing in on Voyager.

            You can tag users so a little badge shows up next their name whenever you see them. So you could tag this guy “uncivil” if you wanted to be reminded who they are.

            To do this you can click my username, then click the ellipsis (…) in the top right and finally edit tag.

            Interested in learning where the setting is to hide votes as that seems interesting to not be swayed subconsciously.

            Example below.

              Oh that’s a handy feature.

              The Hide Votes option is in Settings, Appearance, scroll to the bottom “Other” Category.

              It’s a great feature. On Reddit there was always that horde mentality when it came to downvoting. Now I can’t see anyone else’s opinion.

              Hey there, quick question about that (bear with me English isn’t my native language).

              I tried to do what you said but unfortunately didn’t work (on both Mlem and Voyager). So what I did was;

              1. Tabbed your name (I get to your post and comments)
              2. Tabbed the “…” up right corner
              3. I only get; “send message”, “share” and “block user”.

              Could you tell me what I’m doing wrong?

              EDIT: For the ones on Voyager and had the same issue as me;

              • Go to settings, User Tags and enable it. After that it will work.
