I want to open my personal bank account, but I first wanted to know which types of banks I should look for, any tips?

Doesn’t matter. Banks are evil but forced on us by capitalism. There’s no ethical bank afaik. They wouldn’t survive competition.

I personally choose credit unions as they seem to give back to the community more. I also generally hate larger banks and hear more horror stories about them than CU’s but that’s anecdotal.
Granted, what a CU gives back is frankly a pittance I’ll take it over nothing I suppose.
Credit unions are basically socialist organizations, at least they’re about as close as you can get within capitalism…
Any bank not on the BDS list is fine. Banks to avoid include Barclay’s and any Israeli bank. If you are poor look for a bank that will decline debit card transactions rather than charging overdraft fees.

The only part that matters re: leftism is to think about how you want to handle crackdowns, which is less about which bank you choose and more about infosec. For example, don’t use your personal bank account for spicy business. Use cash if you can and some third party (even a company or non-profit) to shield your personal financea from governments freezing accounts. And if you develop savings, consider having an emergency fund with a different bank in a country that is unlikely to cooperate with freezing your assets.
