👋 Hi everyone!
💡 A while ago I came across some post on reddit where someone ranked the top-50 TV shows using aggregated ratings from multiple sources — and I got really inspired. Hats off to the original for the inspiration and idea.
After hundreds of hours of data transfer, I expanded the idea into a list of 100 must-see TV shows (no anime/documentaries), based on data from 20+ rating platforms like IMDb, Rotten Tomatoes, Metacritic, Letterboxd, TMDB, Kinopoisk, Douban, and more (full list below).
🌎 The goal was to create a ranking that’s as close to objective as possible by combining scores from diverse international platforms — to equally represent critics, casual viewers, and different cultural perspectives across many countries.
To ensure quality and avoid outliers, I only included shows with at least 25,000 IMDb ratings. I tried to make a list of series with a broader audience in mind, which is probably why older shows didn’t make the final top. They tend to get less attention and fewer ratings from modern viewers, though some definitely deserve an “Honorable Mention.”
(You’ll find the shows that almost made the cut listed at the bottom of the table.)
I’ve thought about this a lot and eventually came to this conclusion: if I didn’t filter by popularity at all, the list might end up with a bunch of random series that got, say, 85 points from 100 people. Instead, I gave preference to shows that scored around 83 points but from 300+ people - a stronger consensus. But still series that scored 75 points from 10,000 people wouldn’t necessarily make the list just because of the volume
⚖️ To add some balance, I also included a popularity score as one of the metrics — but kept its weight relatively low (just 1 out of 25 metrics). This metric was only applied within the top-100 to give more popular series a slight edge in their final positioning, while still ensuring rating quality remained the primary factor. Even shows with below-average popularity scores (as low as 65 points) could still make the cut if their ratings were outstanding enough.
For any missing ratings — which happened when a show had no data on a specific site — I used the average rating of the top-140 shows on that platform. This ensured that underrated or lesser-known series weren’t unfairly penalized due to lack of data.
If you’re wondering why your favorite show didn’t make the list — 99% chance it’s because it scored lower across aggregated ratings or didn’t have enough ratings compared to top-100 shows. There’s a 1% chance I genuinely missed it somehow, but given how deep I went into this, that’s pretty unlikely.
Hope you’ll find this list interesting or maybe even discover a few new shows to watch. Would love to hear your thoughts!

If you have a Reddit account, could you share this list there? I’ve been unfairly blocked in my every new account, so I can’t post it myself. I’d really appreciate it if more people could see this ranking! 👀
I’m curious to see this list if we judge based on series that end as well as they start.
It hurts me to not see any star trek or Stargate on here
old sg and st, arnt really seen by younger generation. nutrek is just a terrible revival of the franchise.
Stargate is 2000s, ST SNW is amazing. I’m also rather young. There are great shows like The Expanse on here already, if people enjoy that, they’ll love any of the shows I’ve listed.
Seen about a third of those. But I mean, there’s only so much time, and so much more to experience besides watching television.
decent amount of bloat on here but overall solid list
I’m legitimately surprised to see One Piece, with all of its bloat and filler, on this list.
https://onepace.net/ cuts the series as it stands now from 1000+ episodes to roughly 400+. It’s not 1:1 with the manga, but it’s close enough.
I made the changes
and thanks for the site, it’s really convenient
sorry to confuse you, but this is a 2023 TV series, there are no anime/documentaries on the list
my mistake, I’ll mention it in the post and write year
Eh, pretty much all the ones I’ve seen I thought were okay. If that’s any indication I don’t think I’m missing out on all that much.
Cobra Kai over Deadwood kills me. I’d put Deadwood in top 50, hands down. It probably doens’t get ranked as high because its a Western.
yeah, you’re right - if Deadwood had a bigger audience, it probably would’ve made the final list, maybe around the top 50-60 (rating - 84,58). But unfortunately, it ended up being more like the shows I put in the Honorable Mentions — great quality, just not enough audience to make the main list.
I tried to make a list of series with a broader audience in mind, which is probably why older shows didn’t make the final top. They tend to get less attention and fewer ratings from modern viewers, though some definitely deserve an “Honorable Mention.”
Honestly, I’ve thought about this a lot and eventually came to this conclusion: if I didn’t filter by popularity at all, the list might end up with a bunch of random series that got, say, 85 points from 100 people. Instead, I gave preference to shows that scored around 83 points but from 300+ people - a stronger consensus. But still series that scored 75 points from 10,000 people wouldn’t necessarily make the list just because of the volume. I tried to find a balance between quality and reach, but I’m not sure if I found the ideal mix.
I added ranking would look like without any influence from popularity (i.e. broader audience appeal). Let me know if you think it’s better - maybe I’ll make this the main one.
thank you!
The Good Place should be higher
maybe, but it still one of the best
Such a stark example of “too many cooks”. Give me a list by an individual, or at least a much smaller sample size, and I’m sure the list would be way more interesting.

There is nothing inherently wrong about what you’ve done from a statistical standpoint. It’s just “art” is so subjective and when you have many sources you end up with a rather bland list. It’s similar to big budget movies being done by committee and ending up OK, but not having the edge of a strong independent film. Not wrong, just not really interesting for someone like me. That’s what I meant by my “too many cooks” comment.

ive seen this list on reddit for at least 10x now. and everytime i see the office recommendation, i die inside. watching a terrible boss reminds me of my old boss, and i realise that most people never had to deal with a genuine out of touch asshole, so its funny for them.
black mirror episodes are so simple. its an insult to any viewer.
seinfeld is just siply overrated. theres an awsome joke in every 5th episode, but doesnt really worth your time, trust me.
mr robot is just a several layer “it was just a dream” bullshit. a hacker punishing pedos would be a great idea, but somehow the director has gone insane and fucked uo everything.
rest is great to be honest. rather good list altogether.
you probably saw the other list - I hyperlinked it in the post. I improved the table and fixed the mistakes from that one, but it actually motivated me to create my own list, thank you!
It’d be interesting to see a histogram of release (s1) years for these. At a glance, it looks like there’s some major recency bias at play.

thank you very much for your support and suggestion, it makes sense, and I added text version at the bottom of the post
Op, might I suggest cross-posting this to !television@piefed.social too. I am biased as I run that place but this topic is technically off-topic here.

Minor nitpick: I think you need to distinguish shows where there’s more than one with that title.
E.g The Office (UK) vs The Office (US). Or Battlestar Galactica (1978) vs Battlestar Galactica (2004).
Other possibilities: Shogun, Shameless.
PS: Great list, thanks for making it!
thank you very much for your support and advice, now I wrote the release year for some TV series!
