We should probably start compiling a megathread.
That’s a very good idea.
Brilliant idea
Is lemm.ee dying?
Yes. It’s shutting down at the end of the month.
Not enough funds?
Not enough admins. Too many trolls.
I had no idea my instance had such a shoddy rep!
Not a shoddy rep, just that it grew so large so fast with not enough admin volunteers. All of the big ones are constantly getting hit by these sad losers who need therapy
So then won’t this problem just move to another instance if .ee closes?
No, because most of the other instances are probably more prepared.
not really, lemmyee was more defederated, so it allowed basically anyone. the other ones have blocked off some of the problematic instances. ,ML, hexbear, grad users were all becoming too common recently i had to block them.
yea the purges from reddit, accounts for the sudden jump in users. and many of them were indiscriminately banned, plus now you have the increase of the trolls.
Not necessarily @lemm.ee trolls; trolls from other instances starting shit in @lemm.ee communities, and they just don’t have enough admins to handle things
This is my first time hearing about this.
admins got burnt out from stress, and yes its also due to the significant uptick in trolls, and propagands spreading, hard to control all of it, with no automatic filters, like reddit.
Automatic filters? What are those?
reddit and subreddits have filters that automatically remove content, and now reddit has AIs to automatically ban people and not give you a reason.
Aaaargh, I can already feel my power waning… All these moments will be lost in time, and so on.
On a lighter and more serious note, though, thanks to all the admins and mods that made this ride possible. You are the best.
trying out piefed over here! figured I’d try something completely different while migrating
PieFed is awesome 😎
There are several instances to choose from, though app support is still rolling out and for awhile may be hit or miss.
I really like Voyager for Android Lemmy browsing. I’ve heard others echo the app reference. I was unaware that the apps play a part in the features offered to Lemmy users, in regards to the instances someone uses. If I moved to an instance of piefed, will I still be able to use Voyager? If so, what piefed features may I miss out on?
Apologies if the answers to these questions exceed the info you were providing.
I’m in the same boat with my Sync for Lemmy app. People discuss what their instance has or doesn’t have, and it all goes over my head because I never see the webpage versions. But Sync is apparently abandonware, so I’ll be looking to change things up. Moving to @Lemmy.zip, but I’ll see how Piefed looks once there’s a solid app.
its a shame, because I really like how I’ve customized my sync to look and feel. interstellar is okay, but I think still needs some tweaking.
excites to see where it goes from here
No. There is a fork of Thunder, but afaik it hasn’t made it into the main code yet (and I just tried it but it would not load any posts for me). Thunder support is probably not all that far away now, and Voyager may one day follow, but not today, so if Voyager is a must for you then you have to stay with Lemmy.
I just tried Interstellar and while it is getting better it’s not quite there yet imho, e.g. clicking a link to https://piefed.social/post/815233 from inside it wants to open it in a web browser rather than simply go to the post in Interstellar.
I prefer the web browser interface to PieFed - it’s fantastic. I liked Voyager too so I get it, but for me the features offered by PieFed far exceeds the fun of browsing on Voyager.
Voyager is also my favorite. So I’m sticking with Lemmy for the time being. I’ve made new accounts on both Piefed and another Lemmy instance.
It is great to know your options, and it sounds like you know what you want!
Some things like categories of (multi-)communities are worth switching for all on their own, for some people but ofc not for everyone:-).
Thank you for the information! I just made a new account on feddit.online and will try out Thunder. What other instances work well with Voyager, if you know?
None work with Voyager. Soon all should work with Interstellar. Thunder is a special case where it currently being tested.
In general app support is very new and hit or miss - the webpage is the preferred method of access (though that should change this year as the changes continue to roll out and push ahead:-).
Brings up the question if there should be a migrate community option on the back-end
Piefed actually has this. Shame lemmy doesn’t.
Nice, good luck with the migration! I’ll be keeping an eye out where to subscribe
Started the sign up process and then my password manager told me I was already here.

The part that sucks about all this is that there aren’t any tools to fully migrate my account over to a new instance. Comments and posts will be left behind, but at least they’ll hopefully remain federated for as long as possible so I can look back at them in the future.
I don’t understand what migrating an account could do besides making new, duplicate posts & comments and deleting the old ones, which would mess up comment chains and spawn even more duplicate posts with no comments on them than we already have.
It would amazing if when importing, all the posts, would show up linking to them, just that and nothing more.
But I think this was discussed and its not going to happen.
I am reborn 🙌
Like a beautiful phoenix, you rise again from the ashes!
Welcome back
comm
so fetch
I keep thinking voice comms until I remember the kids are trying to be cool.
The thing I like most about lemm.ee is the defederation policy. Supposedly lemmy.zip is similar in that regard so that’s where I ended up.
i went on lemmy today, and considered .ca even if im not a canadian. i made one for world, but dint realize they blocked alot of the nasty instances.
Is there a tool for comparing Lemmy instances in regards to their federation policies?
I came across https://defed.xyz/ the other day, but it doesn’t seem to fully report everything.
The data is all public and it’s aggregated by a few websites that provide apis. You’d need some kind of tool for analyzing densely connected graphs, maybe load it all into a db and write queries for a start? Or some kind of visualization software
I think my new instance won’t appreciate me migrating FuckableCars here…
ive been called to hexbear. i hear there are owls
I’m now on a few different instances. I was not expecting do have to do something like this, but I understand.
Thank you very much to the admins and mods of lemm.ee. I was on there for at least a year or so, and I will definitely miss the open federation they had.
Oh fuck it. I think I’ll just stop using Lemmy when this instance shuts down. This is the part of the fediverse that really sucks. All the comments, saved posts etc are gone because why? A couple of guys couldn’t handle a few troll messages? Sorry, if we want an independent site, away from the hands of venture capitalists, you’re gonna have to tough it out and deal with a few nasty messages.

No they aren’t. Clearly they don’t have to, as they are in fact shutting the instance.
They’re providing a service, as volunteers, for free, and asking nothing in return. By definition they get to set the terms on which they do that, and it is astonishingly selfish for you to expect them to do so under conditions that are clearly untenable, and blame them for this outcome when they cannot continue.
No. If you want an independent site, away from the hands of venture capitalists, you should’ve stepped up and volunteered to admin when they needed help.
I think posts and comments will stay saved on other federated servers. It’d be weird and would probably break things if the entire server’s activity gets scrubbed.
If you’re talking about the saved comments and posts on your account, doing the data export comes with a JSON list of all the posts and comments you’ve saved
Oh no.
Please.
Don’t go.I think I’ll just stop using Lemmy when this instance shuts down
…and nothing of value will be lost.
Reddit ass comment lmao
…for a facebook-ass person lmao
I don’t think that one worked bud. Try again, loser. Better yet, stop replying to me, I got better things to do than look at your comments lol.

Instead of acting like an entitled brat, why don’t you go start your own instance. Shouldn’t be too hard, just some little technical know how and few bucks a month. Should be a small price to pay to escape venture capitalists. If you can’t handle it then too bad, just tough it out.
saved posts etc
Saved posts are exportable https://lemmy.dbzer0.com/post/45915265?scrollToComments=true
I’m a bit slow. Where are the commies going?
they are fine, .ml, hexbear and lemmygrad has thier space for them. the problem is there were operating from there and trolling on lemmyee.
More than a bit, bub.
