It’s chilli: pinto beans, tvp, mixed veg, tomato sauce, jalapeno, and seasoning. I think the seasonings were salt, celery seeds, veg bullion, chilli powder, cayenne, and cinnamon. I made it in an electric pressure cooker.

I dehydrated it for about 24 hours before I broke it up and stored it in an air tight container.

I really like adding a little bit of cocoa powder to mine!

In the past I’ve used baking chocolate chips but those probably have milk, this time I got baking cocoa powder so I can’t just eat all of it when I’m hungry and want a snakc

It might help to mix with a little water before adding though so it doesn’t get too clumpy, idk.

Where do you get tvp? I kinda wanna try it some time as I’m learning about ways to reduce my animal product intake but I haven’t really found it available anywhere. Lentils feel like they might also be good in this application, cooked a bit firmer than the beans (but then you’d have to time things carefully)

Yeah, I use cocoa powder sometimes but not with this batch. It’s tasty!

I got the TVP at a bulk food store, but it’s widely available in grocery stores here. The bulk store is just cheaper! It might be hiding in the “ethnic” aisles if you are in the states or canada.

Personally I don’t think lentils would be a good replacement for TVP but maybe diced mushrooms or walnuts for their slight spongy/chewy texture? Lentils are amazing tho. I’ll probably make some daal or misir wat as an additional option for the trip.

The fun thing about dehydrating is you don’t really need to worry about timing things with different cooking times. You could simply dehydrate the lentils separately instead of adding it to the main dish. You just need to up the seasoning to accound for the additional unseasoned mass.

Definitely make a paste out of your cocoa powder before adding it to chili! (it’s my favorite chili hack too!)

TVP used to be found in those crunchy hippy health stores, in bulk. Nowadays you might have better luck getting it on Amazon. It’s just freeze dried tofu, you can get a similar effect just freezing it (for texture) then dehydrating it. Or use it right after thawing if you don’t need to store it!

Ah, yes, the perfect meal for solo hiking in bear country. No sign of wildlife for miles — except your own Glade Butt Plug-in. 🤢
